The 2026 Annual Representative Meeting highlights something that many doctors are already experiencing in day-to-day practice: artificial intelligence is no longer on the horizon—it is here, evolving rapidly, and beginning to influence every part of healthcare delivery.

Recent motions that were passed recognise both the opportunities and the risks of AI, from its potential to improve patient care and reduce workload, to serious concerns around data use, governance, and professional oversight. As these policies move forward, one thing is clear: doctors need access to reliable, high-quality knowledge to engage with AI safely, confidently, and effectively. This is why BMA Library is launching an AI curated collection, to help assist our members in navigating this challenging climate.

The BMA Library is committed to equipping doctors with the knowledge and critical understanding they need to navigate emerging technologies. As AI becomes more integrated into clinical practice, the library is prioritising resources that help members:

1. Understand how AI tools work in clinical settings.
2. Evaluate evidence, safety and bias in AI systems.
3. Explore ethical, legal, and governance implications.
4. Develop AI literacy as part of professional development.

While AI will undoubtedly transform aspects of healthcare, the bottom line is:

Doctors are not replaceable.

In this rapidly evolving landscape, continuous learning is essential. The BMA Library is launching a curated collection on AI to ensure members can stay informed about emerging technologies and develop critical thinking about AI claims and limitations.

AI will continue to influence healthcare, affecting clinical workflows, service design, and patient expectations. The challenge is not whether AI will be used—but how it will be used, and under whose control.
